چکیده

Asymptotic expansions for small Strouhal number, valid for arbitrary subsonic Mach number, are derived for the solution of a simple problem of the interaction between an acoustic wave, a jet flow and a pipe, based on Munt's [ l ] exact formal solution. These expansions relate to the pressure and velocity fluctuations in the jet flow and in the far field, and to the reflection coefficient, end-impedance and end-correction for the reflected wave in the pipe. The field inside the flow is compared with experiments. The influence of a Kutta condition at the lip of the pipe is shown to be highly significant.

On the Acoustical Implications of Vortex Shedding from an Exhaust Pipe

Asymptotic approximations for small Strouhal number are derived for the solution of the problem of the interaction between an acoustic wace and a subsonic jet flow issuing from a semi-infinite pipe. Density and sound speed differences between the jet flow and the (slowly moving) ambient medium, and a general edge condition are included. The approximations relate to the field inside the jet flow...

On the Role of Nonlinearity in Mach Wave Radiation in a Mach = 1.92 Jet

Mach wave radiation in a turbulent fully expanded supersonic jet is revisited. Our goal is to determine the extent to which predictions for the radiated sound that are based on linearized analysis agree with solution of the full nonlinear equations. To this end, we solve the linearized Navier-Stokes equations (LNS) with precisely the same mean flow and inflow disturbances as a previous direct n...

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Noise from a Mach 0.9 Jet

A Mach 0.9 jet at Reynolds number 3600 is simulated along with its radiated sound by direct numerical solution of the flow equations. The numerical simulation is shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental measurements at the same flow conditions. Basic turbulence and sound statistics are presented and analyzed. Pressure data is Fourier transformed in the streamwise direction and in ti...

Stability analysis of stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe

This study aimed at linear stability analysis of the stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe. First, equations governing the linear stability of flow in each phase and boundary conditions were obtained. The governing equations were eigenvalue Orr Sommerfeld equations which are difficult and stiff problems to solve. After obtaining the velocity profiles of the gas and liquid ph...

An evaluation of linear instability waves as sources of sound in a supersonic turbulent jet

Mach wave radiation from supersonic jets is revisited to better quantify the extent to which linearized equations represent the details of the actual mechanism. To this end, we solve the linearized Navier–Stokes equations ~LNS! with precisely the same mean flow and inflow disturbances as a previous direct numerical simulation ~DNS! of a perfectly expanded turbulent M51.92 jet @Freund et al., AI...
